How Much Power Can A 12V Lithium-Ion Battery Store?

If you're installing a solar power system, one of the most fundamental questions you might wonder is: What amount of power can be stored in a 12V lithium-ion battery?

Knowing about battery capacity

The capacity of a battery is in terms of amp-hours (Ah) and refers to the amount of energy it stores. You tend to see batteries such as lithium-ion ones, marked 12V 50Ah, 12V 100Ah, or even 12V 200Ah.

To arrive at stored energy, we take the following formula:

Energy in a battery (Wh) = Voltage (V) × Capacity (Ah)

Thus, in a 12V 100Ah battery:

12V × 100Ah = 1,200 watt-hours (Wh)

That means the Lithium Battery 100Ah is theoretically capable of delivering 1,200 watts for an hour, or 600 watts for two hours, and so forth. Real-world use is actually a bit less, though, because of efficiency losses.

How long can a 12V lithium-ion battery power devices?

To put that into perspective better, let's consider typical household or camping appliances:

·         LED light (10W): Roughly 120 hours (assuming continuous use)

·         Laptop (60W): Approximately 20 hours

·         Mini fridge (100W): Roughly 12 hours

·         TV (150W): About 8 hours

These estimates depend on the battery’s efficiency and depth of discharge (DoD). The 12V Lithium Ion Battery can discharge up to 90-100% without damage, unlike lead-acid batteries, which should only be discharged to about 50% to prevent degradation.

Is a 12V lithium-ion battery enough for you?

A 12V lithium-ion battery from SM Solar is excellent for solar installations, RVs, boats, and off-grid use. Knowing how much power a 12V lithium-ion battery can hold and how that translates to practical use makes it easier to plan your energy requirements for any solar or backup power installation!

Can Aluminium Unistrut Handle Heavy Loads And Large Solar Panels?

Mounting solar panels and the support structure is a matter of choice. But the question is does aluminum Unistrut have what it takes to support heavy loads and large solar panels?

Aluminum unistrut strength in detail

Aluminium Unistrut is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to install. Therefore, it is the first choice for many solar panel installations. However, it is not as strong as steel Unistrut, which is often used in heavy-duty applications. The Aluminium Unistrut can bear moderate loads, but if the size of the solar panels is large or there are multiple-panel arrays, then its load-bearing capacity may be a problem.

Factors affecting load capacity

The ability of aluminum Unistrut from SM Solar to support heavy loads depends on the following factors:

·         Panel Size & Weight: Most residential panels weigh between 15 and 25 kg (33 and 55 lbs) each, and larger commercial panels can be much heavier. Installing several large panels will quickly increase the total load.

·         Span Length: The farther apart the supports are, the more stress is put on the Unistrut. Shorter spans offer better support.

·         Wind & Snow Load: Regions with high wind speeds or heavy snowfall require stronger framing systems to prevent bending or failure.

·         Mounting Angle & Bracing: A well-designed racking system with additional bracing improves load distribution and prevents structural issues.

Steel vs. aluminium: which is better?

If you’re dealing with heavy loads like a 12v Lithium Ion Battery or large solar panels, steel Unistrut is generally the better choice due to its higher tensile strength. However, if weight reduction, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation are top priorities, aluminium can still be a great option; provided it’s properly reinforced with additional supports.
